the strangest dream

My work is on display at the Alberta House Gallery in Sault Ste. Marie MI, this month (July)! The show is called The Strangest Dream and was created during the pandemic. I was still able to come to my studio (since it's mostly just me here) and life seemed pretty normal since I don't go out that much to begin with. The series was kind of based on that fact: that for me, everything seemed the same and almost normal, but I knew that it was NOT normal, and just trying to make sense of the unseen occurring while in my little bubble. Simultaneously it's also about self-discovery and connection with all living beings. The Sault Area Arts Council has kindly put together a virtual show since they have limited hours at the gallery, here is the link to view it: The Strangest Dream.

Artist Statement: This body of work is an exploration of dreams in our collective consciousness. Animals are spirit guides, and the female figures are connecting with and discovering something about the mysteries of nature. Floating figures are experiencing the bizarre sensation of having no idea where they are or how they got there, but with no feeling of danger. Others are in the process of transforming or witnessing another being’s mental and physical metamorphosis. Our journeys through life and our realities intertwine. You are the center of the universe and main character of your story and simultaneously a supporting character in many others. This is a very strange dream.

Shout out to my friends Alaina Clarke and Kara Kellar for helping proofread. I'm never excited to write an artist statement, but this one seemed easier with their help.

The artwork is all watercolor with colored pencil, gouache, acryla gouache, ink, and a smidge of glitter. The colors, especially the neon ones, don't translate digitally....so what you see here is almost what it looks like in real life. I kind of like that -- the full experience can only be had by viewing the original. It still looks cool on the screen, though.

Thanks for reading! More news soon... there is *surprisingly* a lot going on for me right now, but I don't want to spend 3 hours writing an insanely long post. Talk soon! --K
